About Us

Curtain Express was born in 2000 with the intention of making made to measure curtains and blinds more affordable, simpler to order, and quicker to deliver.

All our curtains, roman blinds and accessories are made by our own skilled team in St Helens and our lead time is usually just 10 days (if your need anything quicker, please get in touch and we’ll always try and help).

Our Customer Service team is also based in St Helens, and while there might occasionally be a queue (apologies if there is), we don’t use call handling, and you will always be answered by a real person.

Many of the fabrics are our own designs and available exclusively from us.  All are held in stock in our own warehouse (although we are occasionally out of stock of a small number of these).   We also work with some of the UK’s leading fabric brands.

We work with many independent retailers in the UK who would be pleased to advise you on your purchase.  Many also offer additional services such as measuring and fitting.  They can also offer premium making services (including hand-sewn) from our sister brand, Richard Barrie.  To find your local retailer, simply click on ‘Stockists’ in the menu bar.

Ordering & Measuring

All curtains and blinds are made to measure, so to you exact sizes.  When placing your order, we ask you for the following information:

Curtains – The width of your curtain pole or track, and the drop (length). We will then make your curtains to the appropriate size.

Blinds – Either window recess or blind dimensions (width & drop).  If ordering recess, we will make any adjustments to ensure a good fit.

Accessories – the product size (accessories has set sizes).

In all cases please refer to our measuring guides as we all measure slightly differently and it’s important to get this right.  Our measuring videos are really helpful in this respect.

We strongly recommend that samples are ordered prior to ordering so you can accurately check colour. We try and ensure the most accurate colour representation but reproduction can vary from screen to screen.

Curtain Making

Curtain Making

Our standard specification includes pencil pleat heading with a premium quality twill lining and weighted corners. Alternative headings are available including deep pencil pleat, eyelet & pinch pleat; details of each of these can be found in the Curtain Info menu.

Alternative linings including thermal & blackout. Please see the linings section for more details.  Unlined curtains are available if required.

Curtain Widths & Fullness

All curtains are made with ‘fullness’ to give your curtains a gathered or pleated look and this varies depending on the curtain heading.   Simply enter the width or your curtain track or pole, and leave the rest to us.  For tips oh how to measure, look up out measuring guides.

Pattern Matching

When curtains (or roman blinds) are hung the fabric design will flow from left to right across all widths. Where the curtains (or roman blinds) meet in the centre of the window, the side hems prevent an exact pattern match on the leading edges.

If two or more pairs of curtains (or roman blinds) are ordered together in the same fabric, they will be pattern-matched from the bottom as standard.

Joins

All curtains wider than 127cm (approx.) are usually made from multiple joined widths of fabric, depending on the fabric width. The pattern matching on the join seams is as close as can be achieved with any particular fabric. However, it is not always possible to guarantee a perfect pattern match on join seams.

Voiles

Our voile curtains offer a great solution for diffusing light (eg in bifold doors) or enhancing privacy, used either by themselves or layered with regular curtains or blinds.  We use special transparent tapes when making voile curtains, however some makings will still be visible due to the semi-transparent nature of the fabrics.

Curtain Fitting

All curtains are supplied with comprehensive fitting instructions. When you unpack your curtains there may be some creasing or pressure marks; these will normally fall out quickly after hanging in a warm room. Alternatively, the curtains (except velvets) may be lightly ironed with a warm dry iron on the reverse side (hems and sides should not be pressed). Steam, excessive pressure or temperature should be avoided as these can stretch or shrink the fabric. The cords on pencil pleat or deep pleat tape must be tied at either end before the heading can be gathered.

To improve the drape of your curtains we recommend that once they have been hung and dressed into even folds, they should be tied loosely with ribbon in two or three places. This will encourage the curtains to retain even folds when the ties are released. For further information, please refer to our website.

Cleaning & Shrinkage

We recommend that all lined or trimmed products are dry cleaned. For washable fabrics a shrinkage of up to 5% may occur if washing instructions are followed. Shrinkage in any fabric can be reduced if your curtains are dry cleaned. Lined products should not be washed as the curtain fabric and the lining may shrink at slightly different rates, potentially causing the lining to hang below the curtain fabric or distort the side hems.

Pinch Pleat

Pinch Pleat is a classic curtain heading with a traditional triple pleat, suitable for curtain tracks and poles. Pinch Pleats have more fullness than other headings and have permanent sewn in pleats for a more luxurious, tailored look.

The pleats are 12cm (5”) tall and incorporate a fully adjustable sliding plastic curtain hook with a height adjustable ratchet for ease of use.  The outside pleats are set in 5 cm from the edge of each curtain

As pinch pleat heading is made to the finished width, it is important that you quote an accurate track/pole width when you order. We will pleat your curtains to the correct size (including an allowance for springback). See our How to Measure guide for more details.

Please note that size and spacings of the pleats will vary slightly from the picture depending on your track/pole width.

Eyelet

Eyelet heading is a more contemporary alternative, folding curtains into large even pleats. A range of eyelet colours are available to match your décor and curtain pole.

Curtain Express eyelets are 40mm wide (internal diameter) and are suitable for curtain poles with a diameter of up to 35mm. The top of the curtain is 3cm above the inner edge of the eyelet so please measure from the top of the pole and add 3cm to calculate the correct curtain drop.  The outer rings set in 6.5cm from the edge of the curtain.

Please note, eyelet headings are not suitable for curtain tracks or bay windows (without a special pole).

Linings

For improved drape and to protect curtains and roman blinds from the effects of daylight and condensation at the window, we recommend that all curtains and roman blinds are lined.  The key features of our linings are outlined below.  All linings are pale ivory unless otherwise specified.

Twill Lining
This is our standard lining for Curtain Express curtains and roman blinds.  It has a crease-resistant finish and offers a fantastic drape.

Deluxe Satin Lining
This is a heavier quality than our standard twill lining and will add additional body to your curtain or blinds. It also has an easy-care finish for a fantastic drape.

Thermal Lining
Thermal linings have insulating properties which help to reduce heat transmission (in or out) and help conserve energy.

Blackout Lining
This lining will significantly reduce the amount of light coming through the window, although some light will still be visible around the edge of the curtain or blind. To minimise this effect, please ensure that your curtains (or roman blind) extend at least 10cm beyond each edge of the window. Blackout lining also has excellent thermal properties.  Available in Pale Ivory & White.

Bonded Interlining
A polyester interlining is fused to our Deluxe Satin lining for a more luxurious drape. Interlining also has ‘dim out’ properties, reducing light compared to other linings (except blackout). It also has the best insulation properties of all linings including thermal & blackout linings.

Due the additional weight and thickness, we do not recommend bonded interlining for pencil pleat or pinch pleat curtain headings as it is difficult to create even pleats.

Bonded Blackout Interlining
Specifically for roman blinds, this fuses a polyester interlining to our Blackout lining for a more luxurious drape with blackout properties. As with Blackout lining some light will still be visible around the edge of the blind so to minimise this effect please ensure that your roman blind extends at least 10cm beyond each edge of the window.  Like our regular bonded interlining, it also has even better insulation properties than thermal or blackout lining, retaining more heat than all other lining types.

Due the additional weight and thickness, bonded blackout interlining is only available with Roman Blinds.

Bed Runners

Bed runners are lined with bonded interlining for a padded feel. They cover the foot of a bed and are available in the following sizes.

Single: 135cm x 60cm
Double: 200cm x 60cm
Kingsize: 225cm x 60cm
Superking: 260cm x 60cm

Cushions

Cushions are available in square & rectangular shapes, finishing with either a plain edge or piped in the cushion fabric .  All styles are made with hidden zips and oversized fibre pads to better fill the corners. Feather pads are available at additional cost if required.  We also supply ‘cover only’ if you prefer to re-use existing pads.

Tiebacks

All fabrics (except voiles) are available as plain or piped tie-backs. They are made from the curtain fabric with a stiffened buckram core and finished with silver ‘D’ rings.  If choosing the piped option, the piping is made from the same fabric as the tie back.

Three sizes are available as follows:

DescriptionSizeRecommended Track / Pole Size
Small59cm (23”)Up to 200cm wide
Medium76cm (30”)200cm to 350cm
Large90cm (36”)350cm to 500cm

Measuring for Curtains

Get accurate measurements in 5 minutes.
Follow our step-by-step guide to ensure a perfect fit.

Measuring Tip:

  • Always quote sizes in centimetres.
  • It is advisable to use a metal tape measure, as cloth tape measures may stretch

Step 1 : Measure the Curtain Width

If You Have a Curtain Track

Always measure the curtain track width, not the window width.

If fitting a new track or pole:

  • Extend it 15cm to 30cm beyond each side of the window (to allow the curtains to
    stack back off the window).
  • Position it 12cm to 15cm above the window recess. Measure from end to end (A).

If You Have a Rail with a Centre Overlap

  1. Measure the rail as sho wn below (A).

  2. Measure the overlap section (B).

  3. Add both measurements together.

    A + B = Total Track Width

If You Have a Curtain Pole

Measure between the decorative ends (finials). Measure C

Step 2 : Measure the Curtain Drop

If You Have a Curtain Track
Curtains are best hung:

  • To the floor
  • To the sill
  • Below the sill

We recommend curtains finish at either:

Option A – Floor Length

Finish 1cm above the floor
Option B – Below Sill Length

Finish 15 20cm below the sill

(or 2cm above the radiator)
Option C – Sill Length

Finish 1cm above the sill

Important:

Always measure in at least 3 positions across the track or pole, as floors and sills are rarely level.

To avoid curtains dragging across the floor or sill, use the shortest of the 3 measurements.

Step 3 : Choose Your Curtain Heading Type

The way you measure the drop depends on the heading style

Pencil Pleat, Deep Pleat & Pinch Pleat Headings

Using a Curtain Track

Measure from the top of the track to where you want the curtain to finish.

Using a Curtain Pole

Measure from the underside of the decorative ring to where you want the curtain to finish

Eyelet Heading

  1. The 40mm eyelet fits poles up to 35mm diameter .
  2. The inner edge of the eyelet is set down 3cm from the top of the curtain

Measurement
Measure from the top of the pole to where you want the curtains to finish.

Then add 3cm.

Wave Heading

Measure from the underside of the track to where you want the curtain to finish.
